Pastors are often insecure about leading, or having someone in their church, lead prayer meetings. Prayer meetings should be considered to be the most important gathering at church because they bring power into the life of believers, power into the ministries and work of the church, and they cultivate the spiritual growth of the church.

The prospect of becoming a pastor’s wife was introduced to me long before I met my husband. The seed was initially planted in my heart by my Dad. When I was as young as ten he would say things like: “What would you think of being a pastor’s wife?” “Have you ever thought about being a pastor’s wife?” I’m not sure if he said these things because he saw in me someone who could “pastor” others, or if it was simply that he felt I had what it took to complement a man whose call in life was to be a pastor. Whatever it was, by the time I left home for Bible College, I felt pretty sure that God was calling me to this role (in my mind, because I was a girl, I couldn’t be a pastor, but I was certainly open to being a pastor’s wife).

This is a very good article about the struggle that many rural churches are having in either keeping or finding a pastor.

Jesus said, “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” When I first became a follower of Jesus, God embedded the Scripture passage from which this verse is taken deeply into my heart. In John, chapter fifteen, Jesus clearly lays out the ingredients of being a fruitful follower and friend of God. While I love this passage, it has also been a source of consternation. What does he mean by fruit, and much fruit, at that? Does he mean living a really pure life; or leading a lot of people to an encounter with Jesus; or adding many members to my church (as a pastor that one often came into play)? There is a lot of stress in the answers to those questions because I never feel really pure, and I always feel like there are more people I could have led to Christ and, well, it often seemed like as many people left the church as came into it. Hey, we haven’t even talked about family and marriage, what does fruitfulness look like there: every kid serving Jesus wholeheartedly, a wife who is totally fulfilled in her many roles at home and in the church? I’m not sure how everyone else deals with these questions, but I have really struggled with them. I have seldom measured up to either the ideals I have had for myself, or the expectations I felt were placed on me by others, even God. |

Have you been asked, “If you are a Christian, how can you do that … or say that?” Sometimes I don’t feel much like a Christian, especially when someone makes a remark like that! However, I have to say that my idea of a fulfilling Christian life has changed a quite a bit. I was raised on the importance of “food, fresh air, and exercise.” Food was reading the Bible, fresh air was talking to God in prayer, and exercise was telling others the message of Christ (all good things, truly).
